Live

Stream a set or a practice from your browser — to your band, to people you invite, or to anyone.

What it is

Going live streams audio from one person's browser to everyone listening, with about a second of delay. It is audio only — there is no video. Use it for a show people tune in for, or a practice your bandmates want to hear.

One person broadcasts. Up to 50 listeners who aren't signed in can tune in at once; band members and signed-in listeners don't count toward that.
Every session is recorded. When you stop, the recording is uploaded and filed with your other recordings, so a good jam is not lost just because it was live.
While you are streaming, a LIVE pill appears on Live in the band sidebar so the rest of the band can join in one click.

Going live

Open Live in the band sidebar. The Go live card asks four things before you start:

Title: what the session is, up to 120 characters.
What is it: A live set or Practice (see below). Choosing Practice sets Who can listen to Band only; you can still change it.
Who can listen: Band only, Public or Invite only (see below).
Audio input: pick your microphone or interface, then use Test input to watch the meter move before anyone is listening. While you test, Trim raises or lowers the level, and a warning appears if the input is clipping.

Tick Email the band that I'm live to email your bandmates as well, at most once an hour. Then press Go live.

Who is allowed to broadcast

Owners, admins and members can go live. Guests cannot start a stream, but they can listen to one.

Who can listen

Band only is for members and guests.
Public is open to anyone with the link, and shows a banner on your public page. It reaches people outside the band only when your band is public (see Public band page). Public streams also appear under Live now on Explore.
Invite only uses one link that an owner or admin makes on the Live page with Make a link. It works for private bands, needs no account and is never listed publicly. The link is shown once, so copy it when you make it. Make a new link replaces it, and Turn off stops it.

A set or a practice

A live set is saved to your recordings as live. Practice is saved as a rehearsal.

Songs as you go

In the Songs card, type what you're playing and press Tag, or Song ended between songs. Leave it blank for a jam. When you stop, the tags become songs on the recording. Hand tagging to a bandmate with Pass.

A bandmate who is tagging can hand it back with I'm done. The person streaming, or an owner or admin, can press Take over tagging at any time.
The person streaming can press Mute stream + recording. Listeners hear silence, and so does the recording, until they press Unmute.
Guests can see what's playing but can't tag.

Listening

Band members and guests listen on the Live page. The LIVE pill in the sidebar and the Live now strip on the dashboard take you there. If the stream is public and your band is public, anyone can listen from your band page without an account — no sign-up, no app. Invite-only listeners open the invite link.

Followers

Listeners can choose Notify me when they go live on your public page. They get an email when you start a public stream, at most once an hour.

Reactions and chat

Listeners can react and chat. A listener who is signed in chats under their account name; anyone else picks a name once per session. Band members chat as themselves, with a band badge.

The person broadcasting, and owners and admins, can delete messages and mute people.
They can also turn chat or reactions off, set a slow mode, or delete the whole transcript with Delete transcript.
On the Live page the band's own chat sits beside the stream. While a public or invite-only stream is on, the Audience tab shows the listeners' chat. The two are never mixed.

Streaming from a DAW

There is no plugin to install. Route your DAW's master output into a virtual audio device — BlackHole or Loopback on macOS, VB-Cable or VoiceMeeter on Windows — and choose that device in the input picker.

Capture runs with echo cancellation, noise suppression and automatic gain control switched off, so your mix arrives the way you made it rather than being second-guessed by the browser.

Up to 50 listeners who aren't signed in, four hours per session, and one live session per band at a time.

When you stop

Stop & save tells listeners the set is over and uploads the recording to your band. Listeners see a short wrap-up with a link to the recording, if it's public.

If the browser closes mid-set, the backup stays on that device for 48 hours. The Live page offers Upload, Download or Discard for it.

The person who started the stream can end it, and so can an owner or admin.

If your browser or laptop dies mid-session

Listeners stop seeing the stream within about two minutes and it is closed automatically.

Past sessions

Past sessions on the Live page lists the band's recent streams: who streamed, how long it ran and the peak number of listeners. Filter by Visibility or Kind, and press Recording to open what was saved.

Tips for going live

Wear headphones

Echo cancellation is deliberately off so your mix is untouched, which also means speakers will feed back into the stream. Monitor plays your own input back to you, and asks you to confirm you're on headphones first.

Test input first, every time

Interfaces change device order when you replug them. Ten seconds on the meter beats ten minutes of silent streaming.

Use a wired connection if you have one

If your upload can't keep up, the Live page warns you that listeners may hear drop-outs. A wired connection usually fixes it.

Listeners on phones

A listener on a phone that locks will drop within a couple of minutes and reconnect when it is unlocked — that is normal, not a fault at your end.
